Software Development: Coding and Architecture
If you plan to be a Software Developer / Programmer, a degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering is recommendable. As well many Programmers often switched from Electrical/ Computer / Mechanical Engineering after graduating...but some 70% of Developers have an IT related degree or Electrical / Electronic Engineering degree. The rest have TAFE or are self taught.
Infrastructure: Network & System Admin, Operations, Tech Support, HelpDesk
If you want to get into Desktop Support, Unix System Admin, Network Admin or Server Admin...then TAFE is MORE than enough.... Most people ( > 70% ?) in this category are TAFE (Cert IV) trained ... but more importantly, they have relevant certifications like MCSE CCNA....these often matter more than a degree in terms of employability:
Get TAFE or Microsoft certifications ( or Java certifications)... or else NO ONE will take you seriously and you will have a hard time getting invited for interviews...as well apply for GRADUATE level jobs.
The BIGGEST salaries and SAFEST long term jobs are Programming and Infrastructure.
- Java, C#.Net , Ruby, PHP, Javascript Programmers get paid heaps ..as do Infrastructure staff
- Roughly speaking, in the world of Software Development:
35% of jobs are Java
35% of jobs are C#.Net, C++ or C - The remaining 30% spread over PHP, Ruby (growing), Javascript ( Node , Angular etc ) , Python, VB6 (shrinking), Scala, ColdFusion(shrinking), PowerBuilder(shrinking)
- Stay with the growing leaders... it's safer
As well PHP, Ruby are " FREE " so more companies are headed in that direction
Most Dev jobs need HTML and Javascript in addition to the above
HTML/ Javascript/ CSS are more for Front End Web Developer...whereas Java / C/C++/ C# etc more of Back End server side programming
